Cali Shirt

You can find the precious little Cali Shirt pattern here.

19-IMG_7135

It all started with the red boots! Zebra stripes, sparkling with glitter on the bottom, and red bandana print on the top, and they were on sale! The very instant we laid our eyes on these boots we knew that they had to belong to Aniyah! The perfect gift for her!

24-IMG_7146

So what in the world can you wear with red, black and white cowboy boots?

The hunt was on!

16-IMG_713211-IMG_711605-IMG_7106

I knew I wanted a cowboy style shirt, the yoke was a must to give it that western flare. I also wanted to have a girlie feel to it.

02-IMG_709706-IMG_710804-IMG_7100

The Cali pattern had everything I was looking for and I was so excited to find it! It sewed up fast and easy.

You can choose to make a shirt or a dress from this pattern, but I chose to make this one a tunic length.

It has a yoke in the front and the back. The front buttons up with three buttons with a tab closure. It is gathered at the yoke and has full sleeves with elastic at the wrist. You can choose from 4 different sleeve lengths.

09-IMG_711325-IMG_7150

The red fabric was gifted to me by a friend and the bandana print was in my stash.

OK, what else can you wear with red, black and white cowboy boots?!

The hunt is on!

Bitty Birchbark Sweater

It was a race against the weather, me knitting, and Spring closing in and Spring won! Even though I finished the sweater in time for her birthday in mid March, the weather had already been in the 70’s since February. All I can say is turn the air conditioner down . . . . .  really low!

You can find the Bitty Birchbark sweater here.

04-IMG_705501-IMG_705102-IMG_7052

By now it is no secret that I love turtle necks, so that was one of the attractions to this particular pattern.

06-IMG_7057

The other thing that I really loved about this pattern was the simple details. It has a ribbed stitch on the shoulders that gives it a fitted look. It also has the ribbed stitches that run up the sleeve and bottom, extending some of the stitches up into the sweater. A simple detail that adds a lot to the sweater.

21-IMG_708313-IMG_7072

The turquoise yarn is my go-to yarn-I Love This Yarn-purchased at Hobby Lobby for $3.66 a skein, this sweater took two skeins.

09-IMG_706223-IMG_708717-IMG_7079

And it just so happens that this sweater matches her boots that Gumps gave her for her birthday!

19-IMG_708118-IMG_708011-IMG_7063

And they mounted four rows of stones on it. The first row was a row of ruby, topaz, and emerald; and the second row, a turquoise, a sapphire and a diamond; and the third row, a jacinth, an agate, and an amethyst;…Exodus 39:10-12

Lucy Star Dress

I have been sewing for 40 plus years and own hundreds of patterns. I certainly have my favorite patterns and my favorite designers, so I do not take this lightly when I say that Snazzie Drawers is one of my all time favorite designers and the Lucy Star dress is probably my favorite dress to date.

So click here to get your Lucy Star Dress pattern and while you are there, check out Snazzie Drawer’s awesome etsy store.

02-IMG_764901-IMG_764503-IMG_7660

I do have to tell you that this dress pattern takes a lot of time and effort. There are a lot of steps but it is totally worth it! There are endless ways that you could embellish this delightfully charming little dress, and I intend to try a few ideas that I have brainstorming in my head.

04-IMG_766406-IMG_7667

The front bodice is outlined with pink piping and has decorative lace running up the center. I chose a lace with circles and underlayed it with gathered tulle. I sewed a small diamond button in the center of each lace circle.

05-IMG_766512-IMG_7689

The center bodice and the scalloped skirt ruffle are made out of a chevron cotton purchased at Hobby Lobby.

13-IMG_769317-IMG_7702

I used a polyester silk for the side front, back, collar, and under skirt, purchased at my favorite fabric booth at Bowie Trade Days.

The side front pieces are gathered and shirred, giving it a very tailored look and the back is once again trimmed it pink piping.

14-IMG_769407-IMG_7668

The collar, back and skirt bottom are all trimmed with tiny little off-white balls, purchased at Hobby Lobby.

11-IMG_768218-IMG_770308-IMG_767019-IMG_7705

The back was supposed to be shirred using elastic in the bobbin of the sewing machine, but I really struggle with that, so I used a wide elastic to gather it.

This pattern is a halter and ties behind the neck with ribbons.

20-IMG_7706

The lace part of the skirt literally came from a pair of curtains that my mother had about 30 years ago, and boy am I glad I kept them!

13-IMG_769321-IMG_771308-IMG_767014-IMG_7694

This was such a fun project and I wish I had taken a picture of Aniyah’s face when she saw the dress on the size three mannequin, just waiting for her!

22-IMG_772123-IMG_772425-IMG_772924-IMG_7728

And they tied unto it a lace of blue, to fasten it on high upon the mitre; as the Lord commanded Moses. Exodus 39:31

Hourglass Dress

I love making the girls Easter dresses. I am always on the lookout for something new and different. So when I found this dress on etsy.com I fell in love with the bodice. Once it got Aria’s seal of approval I purchased the pattern and set out to make her dress. You can find the pattern here.

01-IMG_7159.JPG

The dress is made out of a super soft and comfortable, turquoise knit fabric purchased at Walmart, a great bargain at $3.99 a yard.  The lace was free as well as the buttons since it is made from an old shirt that belonged to Aria’s mama.

03-IMG_716302-IMG_716110-IMG_7177.JPG17-IMG_7196

The pattern called for a button on the back but I really liked the butterfly opening , so I opted not to use any buttons to close it up.

04-IMG_716805-IMG_716918-IMG_7200.JPG

The vintage lace was given to me by a friend and worked perfect for the skirt overlay, hanging just below the knit fabric underskirt.

19-IMG_720516-IMG_7195

08-IMG_717613-IMG_7184

I love the pattern and totally intend on making more of this sweet little dress.

Brussels Sprouts??

I am sure sticking my neck out but I’m just going to go ahead and confess it outright.

I HAVE NEVER, EVER, EVER, EVER EATEN BRUSSELS SPROUTS!

I can hardly believe it myself! They have always just looked and sounded so nasty that I just couldn’t bring myself to try them.  Until . . . .

I just happen to be in the vegetable section at Sprouts, and there they were in the cutest little bag. I have been trying to change my eating habits and so I thought, “why not?” So I grabbed the handy dandy handles on the bag and put them in my shopping cart.

01-IMG_7000.JPG

I brought them home and set them on my counter, and that’s where they stayed until they were almost ready to throw out. I was finally forced into cooking them.

Which I didn’t have a clue how to do.

02-IMG_7001

I am partial to anything roasted so I decided that would be the best way to cook them. I generally roast everything the same way.

So I coated them with olive oil, crushed a garlic clove and covered them with salt and pepper. I cooked them for about 20 minutes at 425.

04-IMG_7006

I prepared our meal and we had our dinner on the patio.

03-IMG_7003

I took one bite and I was in heaven! I couldn’t stop, I was eating them like popcorn, just popping them into my mouth. They were so surprisingly delicious!

07-IMG_7010.JPG

Where have you been all my life you wonderful little Brussels Sprouts in cute little bags?  I am now a huge Brussels Sprouts fan!

Hibachi Gumps Style

Just coming together as a family is great cause for celebrating around here. But it usually takes a birthday or a holiday to make that happen. This occasion just happens to be gump’s birthday. We rejoice in these wonderful times and certainly have our favorite ways of celebrating.

One of our favorites is stir fry Hibachi style and gumps is the master at it.

01-IMG_3930.JPG02-IMG_3931

Our outdoor griddle is one of our favorite things to cook on. Not only does it make an awesome stir fry, but cooking bacon, eggs and pancakes on it is phenomenal!

04-IMG_3934

03-IMG_393305-IMG_3937.JPG

When it comes to choosing between chicken and beef, for this family there is no choice, it’s both!

06-IMG_3947.JPG

The amazing aroma fills our backyard and we gather around gumps just waiting for it to be ready.

09-IMG_3958.JPG10-IMG_3960.JPG

Absolute perfection!

13-IMG_3969.JPG17-IMG_4013

But the best part of all is in the giving thanks and the just being together.

“Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?

02-IMG_6800.JPG04-IMG_6803.JPG07-IMG_6808

Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?

06-IMG_680708-IMG_683509-IMG_6837.JPG

“So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

10-IMG_6839.JPG12-IMG_6842.JPG13-IMG_6845.JPG

Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?

14-IMG_684916-IMG_685515-IMG_6852

“Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’  For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.

22-IMG_6874

But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.  Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

Planting Strawberries

Our beloved strawberry patch just dissipated after a three year stretch and there was great disappointment.

01-IMG_6777.JPG02-IMG_6779

So gumps and mammy headed out to the nursery on Saturday afternoon to replenish our crop.  The grimace on gump’s face as he handed over the $28 for the flat of strawberries made me think twice.

“I wonder how many strawberries I could buy at the store for that much money?”

But alas, my mind once again returned to sanity as I remembered the exact reason for the strawberries.

04-IMG_6784

Eating the scrumptious berries is just a small part of the joy. The actual true joy lies within the planting, the tending, and the sharing with my girls.

It is in the touching of earth, getting the dirt under nails, deep within the creases of your skin from the packing and patting around the tender, young shoots.

06-IMG_678614-IMG_6832

It is in the lit up faces as they see the growth and the harvest that they will reap from the work of their own hands.

11-IMG_682212-IMG_6823

It is in the joint effort of our family, together watching, watering, and waiting until finally  . . . . .

16-IMG_686918-IMG_6871

The absolute perfect joy comes from the picking and eating of these precious little gems that taste better than anything you could imagine, better than anything you could ever get in a store.

17-IMG_6872

15-IMG_6834

Nehemiah said, “Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.”   Nehemiah 8:10
