Canning Pumpkins

After the squash bugs got through with my garden I ended up with 7 pumpkins. Then to my dismay I had to pull the rest of the vines up because those nasty little critters had destroyed them.

This past week Andrea and I started the process of canning the pumpkins.          Image

After gumps cut the pumpkins up, I cleaned out the seeds and stringy stuff from the inside.

ImageImage

Into the oven it went, at 400 degrees for about 45 mins. to an hour.    ImageImage

I baked it until the flesh was soft.

Image

I scraped out all the flesh from the pumpkin and put it in a food processor to puree.  I also ran it through my blender just to get a smoother, thinner texture.

ImageImage

I pushed it through a sieve to get out all the extra juice.

Image

Then into my jars that I had already washed and sterilized.Image

I put the lid on tightly and into the bath it goes for about 20 mins.

Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few, therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.”                Matthew 9:37-38

Her Beloved

A dear friend lost her husband. He had suffered long and hard for many years and the watching of the pain and torment has ended. His face told of the long awaited peace.              Image

I return home after the funeral and my mind turned it over and over.          Image

The scent of Jesus lay thick and heavy as I entered the room where her husband lay. And as each visitor approached her, Jesus oozed out of her, spilling out onto the ones who came to comfort her, but instead were filled with His presence and blessings.

Her words landed on their ears as a sweet sacrifice to her Lord, assuring them that her strength was in the Lord and she knew she was in His hands.

Image

And through the pain and the tears of her loss, His joy radiated out of her like a blinding light for all to see. Her Lord was glorified here.

She knew that God’s perfect healing was now upon him as she said a final good by to her beloved of 45 years.

The Lord will guide you continually, watering your life when you are dry and keeping you healthy too. You will be like a well-watered garden, like an ever-flowing spring. Is 58:11

Sukkot

The Feast of the Tabernacles is upon us.                        Image

So on our special day Aria and mammy spent our afternoon reading about Sukkot and preparing to celebrate it during our time together.   We are both learning together about the different Jewish feast and holidays. Looking deeper into the eyes of our Lord and understanding more of Him and His ways.

 ImageImageImageImage

Gumps built us a sukkah and it was set up and ready for Aria when she arrived at mammy’s house.         ImageImageImageImage

We ate our lunch in our sukkah.           ImageImageImageImageImageImage

Tomorrow night we will celebrate with our church family, but for today Aria and I celebrate this feast . . . . just the two of us.

“Three times you shall keep a feast to Me in the year:  You shall keep the Feast of Unleavened Bread (you shall eat unleavened bread seven days, as I commanded you, at the time appointed in the month of Abib, for in it you came out of Egypt; none shall appear before Me empty); and the Feast of Harvest, the firstfruits of your labors which you have sown in the field; and the Feast of Ingathering at the end of the year, when you have gathered in the fruit of your labors from the field.   Exodus 23:14-16

At 5 1/2 Years Old

Many wonderful things happen when you turn five.

You get to go to Kindergarten.

You learn to read.

You get to help do chores all by yourself.

And the bestest of all . . . .

You start losing your teeth!                  ImageImageImage

A time to gain, and a time to lose; A time to keep, and a time to throw away. Ecclesiastes 3:6

The Persistent Mother

It has been all these years that He bids me to come and ask Him. To intercede on their behalf and it begins, this crying out to Him and the petitions rise up and I labor on.      ImageImage

And there are also these moments that tie me up, holding me down and I feel weary and I ask Him again, “Do I labor in vain Lord?”

And He lifts me up and I can hear the whisper, quiet like, “You are the persistent mother.”

Image

And my mind races back through the ages to the story in Luke (18:2-8) of the persistent widow and I finally understand! “Yes Lord! I can see it now.” And I understand that He presses me on.      Image

Just days later, He shows me anew. Right out of left field it hits me hard. It comes from the story of Jacob, the one I have read over and over and over. But this here, this new twist that He shows me plunges deep in my heart and I am stunned by His tender care of me, by His PERSISTENCE in showing me over and over and encouraging me on and on.

 Image

Jacob wrestled with God and Jacob prevailed and how could that be? Even in his greatest strength Jacob could not win a wrestling match against God! And I read it again and again.

Image

“Then Jacob was left alone; and a Man wrestled with him until the breaking of day. Now when He saw that He did not prevail against him, He touched the socket of his hip; and the socket of Jacob’s hip was out of joint as He wrestled with him. And He said, “Let Me go, for the day breaks.” But he said, “I will not let You go unless You bless me!” So He said to him, “What is your name? He said, “Jacob.”   And He said, “Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have struggled with God and with men, and have prevailed.” Then Jacob asked, saying, “Tell me Your name, I pray.” And He said, “Why is it that you ask about My name?” And He blessed him there. So Jacob called the name of the place Peniel; “For I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.”   Just as he crossed over Penuel the sun rose on him, and he limped on his hip. Genesis 32:24-31      ImageImage

And there it was! It has been there the whole time and my eyes glaze over the words until He opens them up and I finally can see the amazing truth of it all!     Image

Jacob did not prevail because of his great strength. Jacob prevailed because he was persistent! He refused to let go of the One Person that he knew could bless him, the One thing that would make the difference for him, and Jacob held on and he would not give  up!

And his persistence paid off—-God blessed Jacob. And Jacob was never the same again . . not in name, not in spirit and not physically. It amazes me how God’s blessings can come out of pain, but Jacob is living proof of that awesome truth. Jacob limped away that day a new man, his name had become Israel and the blessings of God were all over him.

  Image

I drink it in deep and my heart overflows with gratitude to my Lord. And I too am changed as I look to Him in this new light, and I come once again, and again. I make my vow to Him then and there, I will not let go, I will hold on with everything I have.

And He bids me to come and ask Him. To intercede on their behalf and it begins, this crying out to Him and the petitions rise up and I labor on. . . . . . .

Then went up Moses (to Mount Sinai) . .  and seventy of the elders of Israel; and they saw the God of Israel . . . And upon the nobles of the children of Israel He laid not His hand; and they beheld God, and did not eat and drink.  Exodus 24:9-11

    Lunch with Aria

“Mammy, I am starved!” Aria expressed to her mammy as she rubbed her tummy.         ImageImage

“Do you know WHY I am so hungry?” she asked me with her eyebrows raised?

“No, why are you so hungry?”   I asked, very eager to know why my little kindergartener was so famished.

    ImageImage

“It’s because of my teacher. She did not give us a good snack today.”            ImageImage

“Mammy, do you know what she gave us for a snack?”     ImageImage

“Two crackers! That’s it! Just TWO!”  She held up two little fingers to press her point home.  ImageImage

And she gobbled up her lunch!

Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good: Blessed is the man who trusts in Him! Psalm 34:8

Our first Tuesday together was perfect timing! Just in time to make challah and learn about Rosh Hashanah.       ImageImage

So Aria and I set out to make the scrumptious Jewish bread.   She made her own little loaf of challah.  She kneaded her bread and worked hard along side her mammy.

    ImageImage

While the bread was rising, she made a Rosh Hashanah mobile.

    Image

Carefully choosing the perfect color for each picture.

    ImageImageImageImageImageImage

Then, cutting out each picture and using a hole punch to make a hole so she could string it to the mobile.

    Image

    DONE!

    ImageImage

She made two Shana Tova greeting cards to give away at the feast.   Image

    Image

We listened to the sounds of a Shofar being blown on you tube, and then it was time to work on our challah again.    Image

She kneaded the bread again, then made three long snake like pieces to braid around the outside of the challah.

    ImageImage

Soon, it was ready and we set it on the oven once again to rise some more.     ImageImageImage

Aria had her bread with her dinner, but mammy’s bread is to be eaten at the Feast of the Trumpets.

    ImageImageImage

She did an awesome job making her challah and it tasted  y-u-m-m-y!  Everyone was happy with the results, especially Aria!

    ImageImage

Therefore, let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.  1 Cor.  5:8
