This sacred pilgrimage began by the will of our Father, intertwining hearts together, plying two cords, twisting and connecting them within His own. Creating for us an endless journey of togetherness, wound tight, rich, thick layers, one rolling over the other. Throughout these years, traveling through the consecrated life that He intended for just us, we have become known by many names.

It has been throughout our individual lives that we have been called, child, son, daughter, brother, sister, aunt, uncle . . . .

But this 35 year journey together began with just us two.

And we were called husband and wife. Mr. and Mrs. Newlyweds, young and in love. Our future held so much hope and expectation, and we met each day with vigor and anticipation. We planned for our future and worked to achieve the goal.

And through the grace of our Lord, and the deepening of our love, we were blessed with children, and we were called parents. Father and Mother. Dad and mom, and our hearts were full, running over. And we grew in love, surrendering our hearts and our lives to the Lord. Lifting up our meager offerings to “Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine.” (Eph. 3:20)

At the near close of this journey, in a steady, unswerving depth unlike any we have known before, we serve the great call of grandparents. Grandpa and grandma, Gumps and mammy, and all the joys this earth has to offer is rolled up in these titles. The riches of His love pours out over our hearts through these names that we are privileged to be called.

We still hope and anticipate even more. Still to come lies before us the treasures of Great-Grandparents. And we wait in the Lord for His perfect timing, to cover us with this wonderful blanket of fullness, continually adding to that first cord, fulfilling His plans and our hearts to overflowing.

Canyon Cowl

With size 13 needles and super bulky yarn, this precious little cowl works up fast and easy.

05-IMG_888006-IMG_888107-IMG_8884

I added just a little bit more length to have more covering. It is super warm and cozy.

09-IMG_8891

The hood and tassel is definitely one of my favorite things about this pattern.

14-IMG_889916-IMG_8908

This is the third project I knitted from this pattern.

Private Lessons

Every Wednesday, when sister goes to school, our little ballerina packs up her little bag and wraps herself up in leotards and tights and heads straight to ballet class for her private lessons with Miss Jessica.

01-IMG_8434.JPG

She spends the next 30 minutes, just Miss Jessica and herself, tapping dancing, stretching and beanie baby rescuing. And all with a huge smile on her sweet little face.

08-IMG_8450.JPG04-IMG_844303-IMG_8441Miss Jessica leads her in a series of heel clicks, shuffle steps, and stomps, and Aniyah follows along click for click.

02-IMG_844006-IMG_8448.JPG

The click clack of her tap shoes echo loud and the sound bounces, like a  ping-pong ball against the walls, landing on my mammy heart.

And can I just say that this was the cutest thing ever!

13-IMG_847415-IMG_8475

And just when I thought I was going to explode from all this cuteness it was time to change shoes.

17-IMG_8480

The ballet section begins and Miss Jessica gently guides and instructs Aniyah.

25-IMG_8496

Every point, every turn out and every arm placement is examined and repositioned for correct form.

34-IMG_851729-IMG_850237-IMG_8523

She stretches her leg on the ballet barre, points her toe and does a most magnificent demi plié–or so says mammy.

38-IMG_852440-IMG_8527

Soon the barre work is finished and it is time for the beanie baby rescue.

Miss Jessica takes her through a succession of Chassés, Relevés, and weaving around the red and green disc that are positioned on the floor like an obstacle course.

And for the Finale, our little ballerina does a perfect arabesque (mammy here), then Chassés home to rescue her beanie baby.

55-IMG_8557

62-IMG_8582

Trying on Miss Jessica’s tap shoes finishes the 30 minute lesson, and that was the bestest, happiest, and funnest 30 minutes ever!

63-IMG_858464-IMG_858566-IMG_8587

And did I say that this was the cutest thing ever!

Looking at things through the eyes of a child changes everything. It gives new perspective and everything becomes precious and exciting!

03-IMG_773604-IMG_7739

Time slows in these moments and the quiet settles in. The stillness allows for basking in the grand surroundings, through the eyes of a child.

09-IMG_775908-IMG_7755

Through the eyes of a child, seeing things created causes great awe and everything becomes magical, leaving you with a wonderstruck heart.

11-IMG_7764

Small gifts become great treasures when found through a deep sifting, searching out the earth, unveiling what lies beneath, through the eyes of a child.

12-IMG_7767

Simplicity and complexity mingle, merging together into one, unifying heaven and earth, in the eyes of a child.

His glory is found here, perfect and complete and it brings great joy to both the Lord and the child when it is seen through the eyes of a child.

And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 18:3

I can’t even remember the exact starting point but I do know that it was 50 plus years ago. My earliest memory of it was around the age of 5. I just had this thing and it drove me. I loved to sew.

Growing up in the 60’s and 70’s in a family of 7 required us to stretch our means and forced me to think in more of a creative direction. With not a lot of finances or space available for anything that was not absolute necessities I learned early on to look at ordinary things with a different viewpoint.

We never had a fabric stash, our sewing room was an old tin that held a few basic sewing essentials; A few old spools of thread, needles tucked tightly in a battered pin cushion and a few bits and pieces of elastic. If we had a little extra money to buy fabric we used it up, there wasn’t any waste.

I would sew anything that I could get my hands on. With just a needle and a spool of thread, I would repair clothing, under garments and turn old, worn out socks into beautiful ball gowns for my Barbie dolls. Even after all these years I still love the feeling of doing it the ‘old fashion way’, by hand, stitch by stitch.

Throughout the years my sewing skills have developed through the gracious gifting of my Lord, repetitive practice and through the therapeutic love of it. It seemed to me that at every turn of events in my life, my Lord would stretch my ability and gift me with a new avenue through sewing. I have tested and conquered most areas of sewing that there is, but there has been this one thing that has seemed to follow me wherever I am in life. It has become one of my greatest challenges and greatest pleasure. It is designing and making little girl clothes.

I started designing clothes for my daughter when she was a little girl, and now that has rolled over to my granddaughters. There is just something wonderful about seeing fabric and having the creative part of your mind totally take over. I see fabric and in my mind it comes to life and I can see what it can become with just some snipping, pinning into place and some swift sewing.

60-DSCF0419

Years ago , for or a short period of time we had the fashion station on our cable TV and my daughter and I would spent as much time as possible watching it. It constantly featured fashion shows, one after the other. All of the top fashion designers and their one of a kind designs would walk the runway and we were mesmerized by it. We would sketch and record our favorites as they inspired and motivated us into action. I understood just a little of what went on in the workmanship of these garments.

The one of a kind designs came at a costly price, some of the dresses ran into the thousands of dollars, and still more into the hundreds of thousands. Each piece was made with the finest quality of cloth in the world, using very costly supplies with painstakingly craftsmanship. Attention to every detail was sewn into each stitch, causing an array of grand, spectacular garments. These extravagant dresses are worn only by the rich and famous. Movie stars parade in front of the camera on Oscars night, and for some, seeing the women display the stunning dresses as they walk the red carpet was the pinnacle of the evening.

But no matter how beautiful the dress may be, how plain and simple, or how complex, it was the label that gave it it’s greatest worth. The name that was stamped onto the back of the garment was what the buyer desired above all.

76-IMG_5869

We live in a world that dictates to us every single second of every single day; what we should look like, what kind of clothes we should be wearing, what we should be doing, what we should be driving and where we should live. We beat ourselves up day after day and complain about the way we look and our lack of whatever we feel we should have. We can never measure up, we can never be good enough, pretty enough, skinny enough or strong enough, and let’s just face it, we will never be a beautiful one of a kind design.

Or can we?

51-DSCF9182

Do you not know that you truly are ‘one of a kind’ made by the Designer of the universe. From the very womb of your own mother the Grand Designer formed you with His own beautiful hands, exactly into what He desired you to be. There is only one YOU and it is He who determines what color your eyes will be, what color your hair will be, if you have freckles or a birth mark. His perfect design decides whether or not you will be short or tall, small framed or large, big feet or little feet, every little detail about your physically being is all up to Him.

When we become His, heart and soul, He puts His stamp on us and we become beautiful and blameless, bearing the mark of the Most High upon our hearts. We become a priceless, ‘one of a kind’ design in Christ!

69-IMG_5251

Ps. 139 tells us what every girl longs to hear. “I will praise you for I am fearfully and wonderfully made, marvelous are your works and that my soul know full well.”

We often times fix our gaze on the wonderful parts of this beloved Psalm, the part that tells us that we are fearfully and wonderfully made, and rightly so. But can we just back up a little bit here? Let’s take a closer look at this passage, and look at the one word that tells us what our response should be to our Lord for forming us in such a spectacular , special way. The word is praise. Do we praise God for how we are formed? Do we praise Him for how He made us, how we look? How He designed our eyes, hair, nose, mouth and body? The Psalmist said that God’s works are marvelous! Look this little gem of a word up and be amazed!

It means causing great wonder; extraordinary; extremely good or pleasing; splendid. The synonyms for this word are: amazing, astounding, astonishing, awesome, breathtaking, sensational, remarkable, spectacular, stupendous, stunning, excellent, splendid, wonderful, magnificent, superb, glorious . . . . .

71-IMG_1195-001

Beautiful friend, that’s YOU!

Are you hearing this? This is how God made you. So why would we habitually complain and grumble against God? Every single thing that God created got His seal of approval, after each created thing “God said that it was good.”

We are not believing God when He said that “it was good” when He created us in our mother’s womb, “fearfully and wonderfully”.

Stop right now dearly beloved! Retrain your thought pattern, exchange the lies that the world has told you about yourself, exchange those lies that the enemy whispers in your ear day after day. Replace that lie with the truth of God, that you are truly made in the image of Him, and you truly are marvelous! And loved! And His! A one of a kind design!

And praise Him!

Spring time in Texas is unpredictable and this year was no different. Planning for the Survival Skills day camp took a lot of thought and even more praying. Storms, rain and wind threatened our camping fun, but once again the Lord hedged us and cleared the day for us.

This year’s camp was held at beautiful Black Creek Lake.

004-IMG_8039002-IMG_8035.JPG

Our day began at 8:00 am sharp.

001-IMG_8033

It took a lot of effort on everyone’s part to set up camp. 005-IMG_8046006-IMG_8051007-IMG_8052008-IMG_8054.JPG

The fire was especially difficult this year considering the damp and the wind and it took everyone huddled together to make it happen. I am very happy to say that for the first time ever, the fire was started with a flint and dryer lint. A great victory!

012-IMG_8060014-IMG_8063.JPG

Once the fire was going the shelter was next. This also took team work because of the wind.

Cali Shirt

You can find the precious little Cali Shirt pattern here.

19-IMG_7135

It all started with the red boots! Zebra stripes, sparkling with glitter on the bottom, and red bandana print on the top, and they were on sale! The very instant we laid our eyes on these boots we knew that they had to belong to Aniyah! The perfect gift for her!

24-IMG_7146

So what in the world can you wear with red, black and white cowboy boots?

The hunt was on!

16-IMG_713211-IMG_711605-IMG_7106

I knew I wanted a cowboy style shirt, the yoke was a must to give it that western flare. I also wanted to have a girlie feel to it.

02-IMG_709706-IMG_710804-IMG_7100

The Cali pattern had everything I was looking for and I was so excited to find it! It sewed up fast and easy.

You can choose to make a shirt or a dress from this pattern, but I chose to make this one a tunic length.

It has a yoke in the front and the back. The front buttons up with three buttons with a tab closure. It is gathered at the yoke and has full sleeves with elastic at the wrist. You can choose from 4 different sleeve lengths.

09-IMG_711325-IMG_7150

The red fabric was gifted to me by a friend and the bandana print was in my stash.

OK, what else can you wear with red, black and white cowboy boots?!

The hunt is on!

03-IMG_7099

She is not afraid of the snow for her household, For all her household are clothed with scarlet.   Proverbs 31:21

It was a race against the weather, me knitting, and Spring closing in and Spring won! Even though I finished the sweater in time for her birthday in mid March, the weather had already been in the 70’s since February. All I can say is turn the air conditioner down . . . . .  really low!

You can find the Bitty Birchbark sweater here.

04-IMG_705501-IMG_705102-IMG_7052

By now it is no secret that I love turtle necks, so that was one of the attractions to this particular pattern.

06-IMG_7057

The other thing that I really loved about this pattern was the simple details. It has a ribbed stitch on the shoulders that gives it a fitted look. It also has the ribbed stitches that run up the sleeve and bottom, extending some of the stitches up into the sweater. A simple detail that adds a lot to the sweater.

21-IMG_708313-IMG_7072

The turquoise yarn is my go-to yarn-I Love This Yarn-purchased at Hobby Lobby for $3.66 a skein, this sweater took two skeins.

09-IMG_706223-IMG_708717-IMG_7079

And it just so happens that this sweater matches her boots that Gumps gave her for her birthday!

19-IMG_708118-IMG_708011-IMG_7063

And they mounted four rows of stones on it. The first row was a row of ruby, topaz, and emerald; and the second row, a turquoise, a sapphire and a diamond; and the third row, a jacinth, an agate, and an amethyst;…Exodus 39:10-12

Lucy Star Dress

I have been sewing for 40 plus years and own hundreds of patterns. I certainly have my favorite patterns and my favorite designers, so I do not take this lightly when I say that Snazzie Drawers is one of my all time favorite designers and the Lucy Star dress is probably my favorite dress to date.

So click here to get your Lucy Star Dress pattern and while you are there, check out Snazzie Drawer’s awesome etsy store.

02-IMG_764901-IMG_764503-IMG_7660

I do have to tell you that this dress pattern takes a lot of time and effort. There are a lot of steps but it is totally worth it! There are endless ways that you could embellish this delightfully charming little dress, and I intend to try a few ideas that I have brainstorming in my head.

04-IMG_766406-IMG_7667

The front bodice is outlined with pink piping and has decorative lace running up the center. I chose a lace with circles and underlayed it with gathered tulle. I sewed a small diamond button in the center of each lace circle.

05-IMG_766512-IMG_7689

The center bodice and the scalloped skirt ruffle are made out of a chevron cotton purchased at Hobby Lobby.

13-IMG_769317-IMG_7702

I used a polyester silk for the side front, back, collar, and under skirt, purchased at my favorite fabric booth at Bowie Trade Days.

The side front pieces are gathered and shirred, giving it a very tailored look and the back is once again trimmed it pink piping.

14-IMG_769407-IMG_7668

The collar, back and skirt bottom are all trimmed with tiny little off-white balls, purchased at Hobby Lobby.

11-IMG_768218-IMG_770308-IMG_767019-IMG_7705

The back was supposed to be shirred using elastic in the bobbin of the sewing machine, but I really struggle with that, so I used a wide elastic to gather it.

This pattern is a halter and ties behind the neck with ribbons.

20-IMG_7706

The lace part of the skirt literally came from a pair of curtains that my mother had about 30 years ago, and boy am I glad I kept them!

13-IMG_769321-IMG_771308-IMG_767014-IMG_7694

This was such a fun project and I wish I had taken a picture of Aniyah’s face when she saw the dress on the size three mannequin, just waiting for her!

22-IMG_772123-IMG_772425-IMG_772924-IMG_7728

And they tied unto it a lace of blue, to fasten it on high upon the mitre; as the Lord commanded Moses. Exodus 39:31

Hourglass Dress

I love making the girls Easter dresses. I am always on the lookout for something new and different. So when I found this dress on etsy.com I fell in love with the bodice. Once it got Aria’s seal of approval I purchased the pattern and set out to make her dress. You can find the pattern here.

01-IMG_7159.JPG

The dress is made out of a super soft and comfortable, turquoise knit fabric purchased at Walmart, a great bargain at $3.99 a yard.  The lace was free as well as the buttons since it is made from an old shirt that belonged to Aria’s mama.

03-IMG_716302-IMG_716110-IMG_7177.JPG17-IMG_7196

The pattern called for a button on the back but I really liked the butterfly opening , so I opted not to use any buttons to close it up.

04-IMG_716805-IMG_716918-IMG_7200.JPG

The vintage lace was given to me by a friend and worked perfect for the skirt overlay, hanging just below the knit fabric underskirt.

19-IMG_720516-IMG_7195

08-IMG_717613-IMG_7184

I love the pattern and totally intend on making more of this sweet little dress.
