Swimming Lessons

On the last day of swimming lessons I went along to see how the girls were doing.

ImageImageImage

Aria had been eager for me to see her swim.

ImageImageImage

She had been telling me how much she loved it and how much she had learned, and now this mammy was here to see for herself.

ImageImageImageImage

I followed them around and snapped pictures, trying to capture their lessons. Mammy was impressed!

ImageImageImageImageImageImage

Coach said that both girls had advanced three levels over where they should be.

ImageImageImageImageImageImage

They both loved it so much and will be returning later in the summer for round two.

ImageImageImageImage

At the end, they were tired and their little tummies was full of pool water. But it was a good lesson and they were happy.

Rough Waters

It was my great idea to go kayaking on the lake, me being inexperienced, not really knowing what was in store.

ImageImageImage

Martin assured me that it would be ok, and we were off.

ImageImage

The wind was up and as soon as we got out of the truck, I began to have second thoughts.

ImageImage

The waves started slapping up against the kayak as soon as I sat down, drenching me and I was afraid for my camera.

ImageImage

We paddled out into the lake, just enough to get to the slue where there would be smooth waters.

ImageImageImage

I could see the contrast from within the slue and I was getting a little worried. I knew I would have to make it back-against the wind.

Image

As we hit the lake, outside the protection of the slue, the battle was on. I paddled and paddled but could not get anywhere. The wind was so strong it was carrying me away from Martin. I could see him trying to keep track of me and also try to stay on course. I was scared I would be carried off into the middle of the lake. And then . . . I started slow and steady. Every word it’s own sentence .

I. Can. Do. All. Things. Through. Christ. Who. Strengthens. Me.

Then I went just a little faster, I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

Then it became a chant:  I can do-all things through-Christ who strengthens me!

And finally I broke out in song, singing at the top of my lungs (no one could hear me over the tremendous wind)

I can do, all things through, Christ who strengthens me!

And the more I sang, the louder I got, the faster I paddled. Faster and Faster, with strength I did not know I possessed, I paddled, just behind Martin. I saw the relief in his face when he could see me, and I told him,

“I wasn’t scared, I was just singing.”

Having a life long love affair with fabric, it makes me very happy when children get excited over fabric.

Aria saw several Disney princess fabrics at Hobby Lobby and just had to have one. She has also gone through a huge growing spurt and all of her pj’s were beginning to get too small. So I let her pick out her favorite fabric-there were several, and it was a very hard decision for her-and I set out to make her a new nightgown.

I purchased a package of T-Shirts from Walmart. I love these little T-Shirts, they come in a package of three and the are cheap enough and you can do so many different things with them.

Cut the T-Shirt to your desired length, depending on where you want your waistline.

Image

Decide how long you want the skirt of the nightgown to be, then measure and cut your fabric, remember to include the seam allowance and the hem.

Image

I cut this one 30 inches wide and 29 inches long, which includes a 1 inch hem.

ImageImage

Sew right sides together.

Image

Finish your edges, I use a serger.

Image

Turn it right side out and iron your seams. I cannot express to you enough how important ironing is. I iron every seam before going on to the next. It makes your finished product look more professional and finished.

ImageImage

Gather the top edge, making sure your stitch is on the longest setting. I use a double gathered stitch for a neater, more uniform look.

Image

Pin the skirt to the bottom of the T-shirt and sew. Image

Finish your edge, then turn right side out. Iron the seam and remove the gather threads.

Image

Hem the bottom edge and press.

ImageImageImageImageImage

This is very easy and a great project for a beginner.Image

Most of us grew up listening to Paul Harvey’s The Rest of The Story. It was always a favorite of mine and I listened with great intent and anticipation, waiting to hear the end of the story that came together, like a ensemble of melodious words, always leaving you with wonder and deep thought.

This is not a profound story. It will not leave you with a thoughtful heart or a provoke you into deep thinking. It is however a funny story that I hope will make your heart smile at the thought of it. And it has a Rest Of The Story flavor to it:

It had been a whole week spent without seeing my girls, and mammy’s heart was aching, heavy with missing them. I had to run errands and was on the road when I talked to Andrea.  “I need to go to the store, and Aria said, ‘I have a great idea! You can take us to mammy’s house and we can stay there while you go to the store!’”

This mammy could not contain her joy, “I think that IS a great idea!”

I explained to Andrea that I had some errands to run and I promised to call on my way home.

After I had completed my tasks, I had just one more stop to make. The Family Dollar store for just one item, a $6 blow up pool.

I returned home, called Andrea, then blew up the pool. Then I set to prepare for my precious girls. I made lemonade, pulled out cookies from the freezer, filled up the pool, set the sprinkler in place and put out seating and beach towels.

ImageImageImageImage

I found last years swimming suits and set them on the counter-above a note that read, “Put These On”.

I then proceeded to make a trail of signs leading them to the pool.

ImageImageImageImage

Then I waited . . . .

Soon, they were here, and I ran outside with my camera and swatted down, just about their level and waited to snap the pictures. I could hear their little feet as they ran throughout the house. I could picture them moving as swiftly as they could, pulling off their clothes and putting on their suits. And sure enough, in no time at all they were there, smiling and laughing with delight.

ImageImage

They played in the pool for a while then it was time for mommy to go to the store, so mammy dried the girls off and took them inside to wait for gumps. He did not know they were coming, so I tried to call him, but he did not answer.

ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Gumps pulled in the driveway just a few minutes later and I scooped up baby and we all ran to hide from gumps-something Aria always does when he comes home. We hid in the piano room, just inside the french doors and waited. Aria and I whispered to each other and baby was froze in my arms, not daring to move her head, but listened to us whisper, moving her eyes back and forth, from sissy to mammy. Every couple of seconds I would lean into her and whisper, “shhhhh” in her ear.

We heard gumps come in and we waited and waited and waited and waited. We strained our necks trying to peer around the doors, but he was nowhere to be seen.

Finally, we heard him again, and Aria whispered to me, “mammy, I can see him in the reflection of the glass!” I moved just a little and I was able to see him too. He was in the kitchen, looking through the refrigerator and checking out the pans on the stove. Obviously, he was hungry.

After what seemed like an eternity, he finally left the kitchen and headed our way. When baby saw him, she squealed with delight, her little finger was pointing at him and her legs were kicking and flailing wildly. I tried to contain her, but it was enough for him to realize we were there. As he turned to come into the room, we jumped out, and like always, he acted surprised. The girls jumped into his arms and they all went to play.

As far as I was concerned that was the end to a wonderful, perfect story, but it was not.

The rest of the story.

Aria has a pair of Martha Washington glasses that she likes to play with and use for dress up. She had spent the day playing with them and brought them with her when she came to our house. Upon entering the house and seeing her swimming suit, she sat her glasses down and ran to the bathroom to change.

When I was telling Andrea that we waited and waited and waited for gumps, overhearing us, he told us why.

“When I came in, I saw your sign that said, “Put these on”, so I put the glasses on and followed the signs outside.”

ImageImageImageImage

We laughed hysterically at the vision of gumps wearing Aria’s glasses and following the trail that had been meant for the girls.

We celebrated this month.

Just loaded up and took off, four hours east, just off of I-30. I do not even know the name of the town, just a lake house sitting remote on a quiet, still lake that mirrored the surrounding trees and sky.

ImageImageImageImage

Soft green moss and delicate pale petals lay frosted on top of the lake, sprinkled here and there with vines stretching out, lining the banks and framing the already beautiful lake. Bright yellow flowers dotted the vines and assorted grasses and cattails filled the hollow spaces, drawing the eye and filling the heart with a sense of gladness and satisfaction. The perfect picture of peace, tranquil and serene. The air echoed with the sounds of birds chirping, filling the air with a mighty chorus of song, and yes also of praise.

ImageImageImageImageImageImage

The multi colored green of the trees walled us in. They stood tall and proud, majestic like. We were fortified here, surrounded by God’s beauty and His goodness.

ImageImageImage

It was a gift from friends, this cabin tucked deep away, to celebrate our anniversary. Their gift extended beyond the weekend get-a-way. Fresh flowers adorned the table top and a yummy treat of cheesecake and chocolate covered strawberries were found hidden away in the refrigerator, just waiting to be discovered. I wonder if our dear friends really understand the gift that they gave to us? I cannot even remember the last time we stole away together. Alone. Just us two. No one else.

Our life does not allow it.

ImageImageImage

It was a time of rest, relaxation and quiet. Far removed from the outside world. We were hidden deep within these trees. We spent most of our time on the deck of the house, overlooking the lake. Just sitting mostly, beholding the beauty of it all and drinking in the intoxicating view. Sometimes talking, but mostly quiet, just sitting.

ImageImageImageImage

We explored the land, another lake, another lake house-empty. Wild deer in an encampment held our attention and we strained our eyes to see the fawns. They watched us closely, they knew we were there even before we laid eyes on them. Such beauty.

ImageImage

We went kayaking on the lake, paddling along the outside, close to the edge, around and around the lake. The peace overtook us, and sometimes we just stopped and lingered in the moment, not wanting the moment to pass.

ImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

He also spent time fishing and I watch from the deck of the house. He slid quietly though the water, making no sound, just slowly gliding through the calm, slicing his way through the moss.

ImageImageImageImageImage

And just like the four hour ride here, my mind traveled the road over the past 33 years.

I would like to tell you that it has been 33 years of marital bliss, but that would not be so. Just like every other married couple, we have had our ups, and our downs. And the vows we took “for better or for worse” was a literal vow and we practiced it repeatedly.

I studied the lake. I lifted my face to my Lord. And there in that moment I clearly saw Him in all of it.

ImageImageImage

There were times, like the lake, that were still and quiet, peace surrounded us. Things were as it should be. Moving along under the folds of our Lord. Breathing easy, filling our lungs with all things good.

Image

There were other time, like the lake, that we covered our lives with other things. We could not see things clearly because the busyness and the expectations of ourselves and of others crushed us in, spilling us out in confusion and urgency. We fought hard to stay on top, struggling against ourselves.

ImageImageImageImageImageImage

And still, there were times when the winds came and stirred us deep, and like the trees, the arms of God surrounded us, hedging us in. They were hard times, pounding us down, knocking the breath out of us and it’s hard to stand up under it. At times it seemed that it would be easier to just give up.

ImageImageImageImage

But we refused. We fought hard and we pushed through, time and time again and it was worth every effort. And the words from Nehemiah are before me as they have been throughout these years and they echo loud in my heart.

“Remember the Lord, great and awesome, and fight for your brethren, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your houses.” (Nehemiah 4:14b)

I have leaned heavily on these words for I know that this fight has always been a spiritual battle. It has been warfare and it drags with it the physical and the emotional wounded heart. We cannot stand against it on our own, for there are no perfect people and we are all made out of dust, but His amazing grace covers us all.

ImageImage

As I sit here and watch my beloved quietly rowing along, my heart beats with gratitude for this time. Time to just sit and not have something pulling at us. Time to just talk and not have a million distractions. My heart rejoices in the rest and the calm. We are renewed, refreshed as we spend our time-just being.

Image

This gift is from the Lord, as He stretches out His love and blankets us with His peace. It has been HE who has been the faithful One all these years. It has been HIS will and HIS grace that has glued us together, tying us up and binding us tightly to Himself. This life—my portion– has been a good one, my inheritance is indeed from my Lord and my cup runneth over. I can rest under the shelter of His wings because His paths truly do drip with abundance and His favor covers us gently and purposely.

All is grace.

ImageImage

And I looked, and arose and said to the nobles, to the leaders, and to the rest of the people, “Do not be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, great and awesome, and fight for your brethren, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your houses.”                       Nehemiah 4:14
