Shavuot

Shavuot or the Festival of Weeks (Feast of Harvest), or as we know it: The Festival of Pentecost is celebrated 50 days after Passover.

Image

So my beautiful friends and sisters in Christ put together the Feast of Pentecost and several of us join with them to celebrate!  ImageImage

Us coming together was simply to celebrate our Lord through this Festival!  ImageImageImageImage

To experience Him through the ancient customs of Israel.

ImageImageImageImageImage

And the gathering together of friends and fellow disciples of Christ come together for a deeper understanding of Jesus and His life, a discovery of His Jewishness.   Image

The passion held in our hearts draws us nearer, to learn more of our Savior, and He bids us to dig deeper still.

Image

We are learning His customs and discovering anew the life of our Lord.  Image

And we pray with hands open, held up, to receive His blessings, and to offer ourselves to Him completely.

 ImageImageImage

This breaking of bread is a spiritual bond that grows us together, and we are of one mind.

 ImageImageImageImage

And we feast!

 ImageImageImageImage

And as we feast, we gain a deeper comprehension of God’s plan, for He calls it ,”The feasts of the Lord.” Leviticus 23:2  ImageImage

And us, as Christians desire to learn more, to plunge deeper into God’s plan of redemption, to have greater understanding of the feasts and what it means for us. For Jesus, our Lord and Savior is the supreme fulfillment of each and every single feast.   Image

And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them: ‘The feasts of the Lord, which you shall proclaim to be holy convocations, these are My feasts.”  Leviticus 23:1-2

Many people shall come and say, “Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; He will teach us His ways, and we shall walk in His paths.” For out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. Isaiah 2:3

London Tea Set

For those of you that know me and my girls know that we love tea. We always drink tea when we are together, blended with copious amount of raw honey.

Image

So while on route to Nairobi Kenya we had a layover in London, and can I just say, Image

“I LOVE LONDON!” Even though I did not leave the airport, the six hours I spent there was amazing. The London airport was like a huge shopping mall!   Image

I found the amazing tea set at a shop and knew I had to purchase them for my girls (along with some breakfast blend London tea).

Image

This was the beginning of my trip and I carried these valuable treasures with me for the rest of the journey, guarding them and protecting them from harm. Many had very sweetly offered to carry my bag but I politely refused for fear of something happening to the tea set.

 Image

In the end, it was worth the effort. We did make another stop in London on the way home, but the beloved store that carried the tea sets was no where in sight, it was in a different part of the enormous airport.

This gift was a favorite of both my girls. I am so glad I took the pains to get them and guard them throughout the trip.

Queen of Hearts

If you take a peek inside the gym at the intermediate school you will find a very special teacher. This year is the 30 year mark for BISD teacher Karen Cook.ImageImage

Mrs. Cook is the Health Fitness teacher and her passion is to teach the students a balance of good nutrition, exercise and rest and how to maintain a healthy body throughout their life. Teaching each and every student that “they are fearfully and wonderfully made.” (Psalm 139:14)  ImageImageImage

For the past 10 years, Mrs. Cook has headed up the “Jump Rope for Heart”, something that she considers to be her ministry as she strives against the battle of heart disease and stroke, engaging her students in the fight.   ImageImage

She has sparked an eagerness and awareness in the hearts of her students to give forth the effort for this cause, in both the physical (jumping) and financial (getting pledges).    ImageImageImageImage

And their eyes have been opened to their own world, a world where heart disease and stroke affects everyone of us and she gives each child the opportunity to tell their own stories of how they have been affected by these deadly diseases.

ImageImageImage

And some have put together a poster of a loved one that has battled heart disease and it is displayed on her wall of hearts.    Image

And our very own beloved teacher is there on her wall.   Image

When she first started the “Jump Rope for Heart” it was an after school program with a hand full of children participating and they raised $2,056.49 in donations for the American Heart Association.

But her passion and enthusiasm was contagious and she worked hard to encourage the students to participate.   Image

Because of her devotion and hard work she has turned this program into the successful, thriving event that we see today.

This year 333 student participated in “Jump Rope for Heart” and it was an amazing event. They raised a total of $18,243.28, setting an all time record!   Image

Over the past ten years, under the direction and tutelage of Mrs. Cook, she and her students have raised $130,679.08 for the American Heart Association!   Image

And this year, out of 2000 candidates, Mrs. Cook was one of the 35 recipients of the Texas Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance/Jump Rope For Heart grants for her outstanding work in educating our children about heart disease.   Image

The article commended Mrs. Cook saying, “The community of Bridgeport and the American Heart Association owe Karen Cook a debt of gratitude for her continuous efforts to raise funds and educate our children and community on the hazards and prevention of heart disease and stroke. With enough dedicated teachers and individuals like Mrs. Cook, we may just have a fighting chance to eventually conquer the epidemic of these deadly killers.” (Bridgeport Index-by Jeff Johnston)

It was an honor for me to witness the Jump Rope for Heart event. It was a grand, spectacular event and I was overwhelmed with emotions and I felt privileged to be a part of such an amazing cause.

I am thankful for my dear friend and teacher Mrs. Cook, who loves her students and challenges each of them to follow in her footsteps and to dare to be different and to make the change.Image

I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;  Marvelous are Your works, and that my soul knows very well.  Psalm 139:14

The Surgery

It’s a long road. I’ve been here before and it’s all you can do to catch your breath.

The fear hangs thick in the waiting room and you can just about smell it on each and every parent there.

You are totally helpless, all you can do is sit . . . . and wait,ImageImageImageImage

and pray . . . .

Image

and keep busy.

ImageImageImageImage

The call finally comes and it’s ok to breath, and they wheel him out and we follow close behind.ImageImage

They get him settled in his room,ImageImageImage

and he’s hooked up to all kinds of contraptions!ImageImageImage

And we finally get to look at the results of the surgery. This pectus repair, the reconstruction of a chest that was caved in.ImageImage

And the heart is crushed when you hear his words, “I was afraid I might die because it was so close to my heart.” Relief filling his eyes and you find yourself whispering your thanks to God.

Image

And there are many grateful hearts this day for one that is so loved. And the joy can not be contained.

ImageImageImageImageImage

Thank you for praying for Sebastian!

Would You Please Pray?

For those of you who read my book Ponderings of a Mother’s Heart, know that I wrote about my son and the physical problems he has because of a syndrome called Ehler-Danlos syndrome.  Because of this syndrome he had to have some major surgeries with a long a recovery.Image

And now today, a young man from our own church family will have the same surgery. Will you please pray for Sebastian?
