Potato Soup Recipe

Growing up we always had potato soup. We never measured anything, we just dumped it all together and cooked it. This recipe is one that I learned from my mom, I just adapted it to fit my modern day taste.

You will need:

And~I usually use raw milk, but I am out.

ImageI

I peeled and cut up 5 potatoes and about a 1/4-1/2 cup of onion. ImageImage

I covered them with water and cooked them over medium heat until the potatoes were soft.

Image

I cooked some bacon and broke it up and added it to the potatoes. Image

Saving a few of the pieces to crumble on top of the finished soup.Image

When the potatoes were soft, I added milk. I did not measure, I just poured it in until it completely covered the potatoes.  I also cubed up about 1/4 of a box of velveeta cheese and put it in the potatoes.

I added 1/3-1/2 cup of instant mashed potato flakes. Yes, I know that it is shameful, but it is a wonderful thickener and it really taste good.Image

I simmered it on the stove until everything was hot and melted and thick.Image

I crumbled the bacon.Image

Dished it up in a bowl, covering it with MORE cheese and the crumbled bacon.Image

And it was wonderful!

But He said to them, “I have food to eat of which you do not know.”  John 4:32

My Fairy Garden

Several years ago on a trip to downtown Houston, I found an amazing discount bookstore.Image

My Fairy Garden was among several of the treasures I found there.Image

The book starts with the story of the fairies,Image

then opens up to a pop-up world of fairy land. Inside the book are several little fairy paper dolls that they can play with.

Image

I have taken great delight myself in reading the story to the children,Image

and then, watching as their eyes get big with delight as the book magically opens up to a world of fairies.

Image

They enjoy hours of play with this special little book.ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

And This I Pray

Image

And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment, that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ, being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.  Philippians 1:9-11

The Smoker

I had these great plans and had worked out all the details in my head.

I thought it would be great to ask people to donate 4 or 5 briskets so we could smoke them, shred them up and serve them on buns to the homeless.

Then I got a phone call from Dwayne. “He told me that someone had given him my name and number and he had something he wanted to talk to me about. He had built himself a big smoker and it was his desire to use it for ministry and did I think that would be something I would be interested in?”

Image

I couldn’t believe the timing~or could I? God’s timing is always perfect!

“Yes! I was definitely interested!” We talked through the details of what we thought would work for the trip to serve the homeless just a couple of weeks away. I told him that I thought 4 or 5 briskets would be enough and he said he thought maybe more like 7-8. We both agreed to talk to our congregation that next Sunday and see how many donations we could get. And that was our plan–however God had plans of His own and people began to give!  Image

The day before our scheduled trip to serve I began to get calls and text, some of our most dedicated helpers were canceling. Sickness had been plaguing people all over the globe and our people had not been spared. Others had things that came up and I begin to wonder if we would have enough people to do such a big job. I trusted that my Lord would provide, as He always does.

On that morning, we arrived at church and found the kitchen full of supplies for the meal.Image

And people just started to show up and it was more than had ever made the trip before. I did not count but I am sure it was over thirty people. We ended up needing to use four church vans and five individual vehicles. Our caravan drove down highway 35, journeying together on this ministry that our Lord had blessed so abundantly more than I could have ever imagined.Image

We ended up having ten briskets and all in all we served well over 200 sandwiches along with chips and drink.

Dwayne’s state of the art smoker was amazing and not only were we, the workers, and they, the homeless blessed beyond words, Dwayne left that day oozing joy! The Lord had used Dwayne and he was blessed. His hearts desire and his hard work had left him with a gratifying joy that could only come from the Lord.

He is ready to go again!ImageImage

Isn’t that so like our Lord? He takes our meager little efforts and out of His great goodness and out of His endless storehouse, “is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think.” (Eph. 3:20)

And as for His workers, people from different churches throughout wise county, working together in unity and in love. Our focus was on Him and our efforts were for Him and because our eyes were on Him we were one! And His love poured out of our hearts that day and we were so grateful!

ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height–to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.  Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever.  Amen.  Ephesians 3:14-21

Vintage Pattern

This was done a few years ago.

The pictures are not great, they were taken on a cell phone at the Cheese Cake Factory in South Lake, Texas.

Image

I used this pattern to make a french smock dress, the pattern on  the fabric is of Paris and the girl on the fabric looks a lot like le madeleine.

Image

I used  coordinating fabrics for the collar, cuffs and the neck tie.

I made a beret using the same fabric to complete the french look. Image

Pajama Top Tutorial

Of course Aria needed a top to go with her new pj bottoms.

This time I went to my own closet and found a soft comfy T-shirt that was. . . well . . . let’s just say a little too tight on me.  But it was perfect for this.Image

I cut off the arms, the collar and cut down the neck.  I wanted it to be loose around the neck since she was going to be sleeping it.Image

Once again, I left the bottom edge of the T-shirt for the hem.

I sewed the shoulder seams and cut the arms down to fit this new size. I wanted the sleeves to be a 3/4 length.

Image

From the top part that I cut off, I made the collar. I cut it about 3 inches wide also cutting it the width of the neck edge and folded it in half, pressing it in place. Using my serger I sewed it onto the top.

Done!  And it was free!!!

PJ Bottoms Tutorial

I wanted to make Aria some pajama bottoms and the most logical place for me to look was in Kory’s closet.  He had taken all the clothes he wanted and told me not to send anymore to his tiny little apartment, having very limited storage.

I found a couple of T-shirts that I thought would work.

You can find a more detailed tutorial here:

http://www.madebylex.com

Image

Here is what you will need.  A T-shirt, fabric for the waistband (I used knit fabric on one pair and minky on the the pair I am showing), elastic for the waistband, cut the correct length to fit your child and pants that fit for a guide.

You could make these pants for a boy or a girl.

Image

I folded the T-shirt on it’s side so that the print would run across the side. One T-shirt had a pocket, by folding it the pocket ended up on the back.Image

Cut the pants pattern out, you can make them be as loose fitting or as tight as you want, I wanted them to be lounge pants so I cut them bigger. If your child is a little older you could add to the bottom or you could make them capris.

The bottom of the legs are the edge of the T-shirt, so you will not have to hem at all.

Image

Cut the waistband the width of the pants and fold it in half, making sure that it is wide enough for your elastic to fit, plus the seam.Image

Sew the crotch seams first, then sew up the inside seams.Image

Turn them right side out and press with an iron.Image

Sew the waistband on leaving an opening to insert the elastic.Image

Run the elastic through and close up the seam. Image

Done. Super easy and very little cost.Image

Aria’s favorite was the jungle print with the pocket on back.Image

They were very comfortable for her and she did not want to take them off.

Tomorrow I will show you the tutorial for her top.
