Princess Jasmine

Genie: [sniffs tearfully] No matter what anybody says, you’ll always be a prince to me.

09-IMG_3548
Sultan: That’s right! You’ve certainly proven your worth as far as I’m concerned. It’s that law that’s the problem.

01-IMG_3731
Princess Jasmine: Father?

05-IMG_378103-IMG_3741
Sultan: Well, am I Sultan or am I Sultan? From this day forth, the Princess shall marry whomever she deems worthy.

10-IMG_3585

Princess Jasmine: Him! I choose… I choose you, Aladdin.

05-IMG_378106-IMG_3790
Aladdin: [chuckles] Call me Al.

Quote from IMDb

And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”  Joshua 24:15

quote taken from Bosch

I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Marvelous are Your works,
And that my soul knows very well.   Psalm 139:14

I am sure sticking my neck out but I’m just going to go ahead and confess it outright.

I HAVE NEVER, EVER, EVER, EVER EATEN BRUSSELS SPROUTS!

I can hardly believe it myself! They have always just looked and sounded so nasty that I just couldn’t bring myself to try them.  Until . . . .

I just happen to be in the vegetable section at Sprouts, and there they were in the cutest little bag. I have been trying to change my eating habits and so I thought, “why not?” So I grabbed the handy dandy handles on the bag and put them in my shopping cart.

01-IMG_7000.JPG

I brought them home and set them on my counter, and that’s where they stayed until they were almost ready to throw out. I was finally forced into cooking them.

Which I didn’t have a clue how to do.

02-IMG_7001

I am partial to anything roasted so I decided that would be the best way to cook them. I generally roast everything the same way.

So I coated them with olive oil, crushed a garlic clove and covered them with salt and pepper. I cooked them for about 20 minutes at 425.

04-IMG_7006

I prepared our meal and we had our dinner on the patio.

03-IMG_7003

I took one bite and I was in heaven! I couldn’t stop, I was eating them like popcorn, just popping them into my mouth. They were so surprisingly delicious!

07-IMG_7010.JPG

Where have you been all my life you wonderful little Brussels Sprouts in cute little bags?  I am now a huge Brussels Sprouts fan!

Roasted Brussels Sprouts: Preheat oven to 425 degrees,  wash and dry Brussels sprouts, 3 tablespoons olive oil, 1 garlic clove, salt and pepper to taste.  Bake for about 20 minutes, shaking the pan to turn the Brussels sprouts every 5 minutes.

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 1 Cor. 10:31

Just coming together as a family is great cause for celebrating around here. But it usually takes a birthday or a holiday to make that happen. This occasion just happens to be gump’s birthday. We rejoice in these wonderful times and certainly have our favorite ways of celebrating.

One of our favorites is stir fry Hibachi style and gumps is the master at it.

01-IMG_3930.JPG02-IMG_3931

Our outdoor griddle is one of our favorite things to cook on. Not only does it make an awesome stir fry, but cooking bacon, eggs and pancakes on it is phenomenal!

04-IMG_3934

03-IMG_393305-IMG_3937.JPG

When it comes to choosing between chicken and beef, for this family there is no choice, it’s both!

06-IMG_3947.JPG

The amazing aroma fills our backyard and we gather around gumps just waiting for it to be ready.

09-IMG_3958.JPG10-IMG_3960.JPG

Absolute perfection!

13-IMG_3969.JPG17-IMG_4013

But the best part of all is in the giving thanks and the just being together.

15-IMG_399825-IMG_3997.JPG16-IMG_400821-IMG_4030.JPG22-IMG_4029.JPG19-IMG_4017.JPG20-IMG_4025.JPG23-IMG_4019.JPG24-IMG_4002.JPG

Not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.   Hebrews 10:25

01-IMG_6798.JPG03-IMG_6801.JPG05-IMG_6804

“Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?

02-IMG_6800.JPG04-IMG_6803.JPG07-IMG_6808

Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?

06-IMG_680708-IMG_683509-IMG_6837.JPG

“So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

10-IMG_6839.JPG12-IMG_6842.JPG13-IMG_6845.JPG

Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?

14-IMG_684916-IMG_685515-IMG_6852

“Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’  For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.

22-IMG_6874

But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.  Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

Matthew 6:25-34

Our beloved strawberry patch just dissipated after a three year stretch and there was great disappointment.

01-IMG_6777.JPG02-IMG_6779

So gumps and mammy headed out to the nursery on Saturday afternoon to replenish our crop.  The grimace on gump’s face as he handed over the $28 for the flat of strawberries made me think twice.

“I wonder how many strawberries I could buy at the store for that much money?”

But alas, my mind once again returned to sanity as I remembered the exact reason for the strawberries.

04-IMG_6784

Eating the scrumptious berries is just a small part of the joy. The actual true joy lies within the planting, the tending, and the sharing with my girls.

It is in the touching of earth, getting the dirt under nails, deep within the creases of your skin from the packing and patting around the tender, young shoots.

06-IMG_678614-IMG_6832

It is in the lit up faces as they see the growth and the harvest that they will reap from the work of their own hands.

11-IMG_682212-IMG_6823

It is in the joint effort of our family, together watching, watering, and waiting until finally  . . . . .

16-IMG_686918-IMG_6871

The absolute perfect joy comes from the picking and eating of these precious little gems that taste better than anything you could imagine, better than anything you could ever get in a store.

17-IMG_6872

15-IMG_6834

Nehemiah said, “Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.”   Nehemiah 8:10

Have you visited the storehouses of the snow
or seen the storehouses of hail?  Job 38:22

1-DSCF7162

My home state of Michigan is shut down today with several inches of accumulated snow, stranding people in their homes, forcing them to hunker down under the Arctic winter storm blast.

Photos of the blizzard fill my computer screen, revealing to the world the beautiful snow fall and a fun filled day for the home bound school children. Pictures of how they spent their day, and the epic posing in front of huge snowmen, clad in heavy winter coats, snow boots and wollen mittens and hats.

This is not a new concept for these Michiganders, they know the drill well and for the most part embrace a day off from work, toasting themselves in front of a blazing hot fire. Baking cookies and sipping hot cocoa oozing with fluffy white marshmallows. Snuggling on the couch. Filling their tummies with hot chili, drenched in onions and cheese and topping it off with a cast iron pan of cornbread.

3-DSCF7168

I also know this scenario well. I remember it clearly and as I sort through the photos of the new, freshly fallen snow of today, my memory takes me back to other snow storms, from many years past.

I remember quite clearly the great snow storms that we had when I was a little girl growing up in Michigan. I remember the fresh, deep snow and how difficult it was to walk in it. Every step sunk thigh high and it was a huge effort to take another step, it was exhausting, causing jelly legs that shook when you tried to stand on them, threatening to buckle under you.

There were times though when I would walk behind someone, usually an adult and I would very carefully follow in their footsteps. Each step they made packed the snow down and left an imprint for my smaller foot and that was the path I would take, carefully placing my foot in the footprint that they had left before me. I thoroughly enjoyed doing that and it has stuck tight in my mind for all these 30 plus years.

4-DSCF71705-DSCF7171

It is just like that with our Lord, you know. He has gone before us and His word tells us again and again to follow His path. After all, it is His righteousness that goes before us, and makes His footsteps our pathway. (Ps. 85:13) This is the only true and right path to take and He is the only true and right person to follow. It is like a careful placing of your foot in His already packed and secure imprint, the well beaten trail of the living Word that echos in your ear, “This is the way, walk in it, whether you turn to the right or the left.” (Is. 30:21) It is a looking straight ahead and fixing our eyes on what lies before. A marking out a straight path for our feet, the safe path, and not getting sidetracked. (Prov. 4:25-27) It’s a highway and it will be called the Way of Holiness. (Is. 35:8) A retracing of the steps of the great saints of old who have laid their lives bare, open and exposed for us to see. (Heb. 11)

6-DSCF7129

Let us carefully place our feet behind the One who goes before, and follow the One who has hedged us behind and before and laid His hand upon us. (Ps. 139:5)

Does the rain have a father?
Who gives birth to the dew?
Who is the mother of the ice?
Who gives birth to the frost from the heavens?
For the water turns to ice as hard as rock,
and the surface of the water freezes.

Job 38:28-30

01-IMG_668203-IMG_6684

A typical Texas winter, with absolutely no snow! So in guided lesson number three we created our own.

04-IMG_6686

Inspired by pinterest, once again, we begin our journey through layers and color.

The main lesson in this painting was blending, one of my favorite things to do. She was a little nervous about getting the paint too close together, and it took some convincing for her to let it go and mix away. It was hard for her to see at first, but when it started to come together she had fun with it.

05-IMG_668808-IMG_6695

While this layer was drying. . . . another painting.

Onto the second layer, painting in the snowman, along with his scarf, buttons and ear muffs.

22-IMG_673523-IMG_6737

So . . . . while this layer was drying. . . . a little beading.

20-IMG_6728

The final layer really brought the whole painting together. She used a black paint pen and drew in the face and traced the snowman.

25-IMG_673924-IMG_673826-IMG_674029-IMG_674327-IMG_6741

She signed her name and she was done!

28-IMG_6742

This was a fun project and I think it turned out great.

31-IMG_6746

32-IMG_6747

“For to the snow He says, ‘Fall on the earth,’ And to the downpour and the rain, ‘Be strong.’ Job 37:6

This is the second guided painting lesson with Aria.

This painting is all about Spring, with sky blue colors, bright, cheerful birds and red and pink apple blossoms.

The inspiration came from pinterest.

01-IMG_323402-IMG_3235

Just like the first one it was done in layers. She painted the base color, then waited for it to dry.

03-IMG_3237

She used a play pizza cutter to make the branches.

07-IMG_326504-IMG_323805-IMG_323906-IMG_3240

After the second layer was dried, she moved on to the  flowers.

08-IMG_326909-IMG_3270

13-IMG_3278

I pitched in and helped a little with the flowers, it was a little overwhelming for her.

The birds came last, and she was finished.

16-IMG_328318-IMG_328517-IMG_328420-IMG_3297

Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are? Matt. 6:26

The Sleep Over

It broke her little heart every time she had to leave her big sister at mammy and gump’s house to spend the night. She wanted to stay so bad, and she was determined that she would be big enough, and brave enough, but she was too attached to mommy and could not bear to leave her for even just one night.

So mommy and mammy devised a plan. She would finally get to spend the night, along with her sister and her mommy. The perfect solution.

The plan was set in motion and preparations were underway. She was so excited and it bubbled out of her and onto the rest of us. She could not wait.

36-IMG_5371

35-IMG_5370

They came bearing gifts. Each of us got a new pair of pajamas, so after dinner, the girls got their bath in mammy’s great big tub (a favorite thing for them),then they donned their new pj’s and the fun began.

We went from one project to another. They spent hours painting (another favorite), and coloring.

21-IMG_555420-IMG_5555

18-IMG_5557

11-IMG_539914-IMG_5406

Even mommy joined in the painting fun.

09-IMG_539610-IMG_539715-IMG_5407

16-IMG_541017-IMG_5552

Mammy and mommy spent time on their favorite things as well.

22-IMG_556327-IMG_557423-IMG_5565

It was perfect !

She ended up with mammy for just about ten minutes, them spent the rest of the night with mommy. But she was happy. And mammy was happy. And we are already planning our next sleep over.

37-IMG_5372Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.  James 1:17
