The Joyful Moments

Sickness had hit each of our families and it had been nearly two weeks since I last saw my girls. It’s enough to break a mammy’s heart.

So on Thursday my back door flew open and Aria burst in and Aniyah was right behind her. There was much running and jumping into arms. Laughter bounced off the walls and landed smack dab in the middle of my heart, causing a great eruption of joy. There were hugs and more hugs and kisses and more kisses!

Aria came bearing gifts. Gifts she had brought to her mammy from her own stock pile of treasures, and I immediately put them on display. Her face gave way to her inner heart as I saw the smile and her eyes twinkling with delight.

We cuddled in mammy’s favorite chair, the three of us, and only the sturdy arms held us in, keeping us from spilling over onto the floor. I sat in the middle, Aria on my left and Aniyah on my right, both sitting half on my lap. We watched one of our favorite shows, the one we watch every time they come. Each crunched and munched away on their own snacks and I heard it in each ear, and my heart was exceedingly glad.

Mammy was so happy, and she knew without a doubt that her Lord covered her with His goodness.

My Brown Eyed Girl

Could it even be possible?

Could two years just slip by so suddenly without notice?

And yet, these past two years feel as if they always were, I can’t fathom life before her.

She has captured our hearts and latched on tight, this little brown eyed girl of ours.

She has brought so much joy into our lives, filling us with the Father’s blessings beyond measure.

So on her 2nd Birthday, this mammy would just like to say:

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways:

I love your ‘pleased with myself’ smile that lights up your whole face, and lights up our whole world.

IMG_7488IMG_3874IMG_2592IMG_1104

I love how sometimes when I look at you I see your mommy when she was your age. It takes me back and my heart smiles big.

IMG_1098IMG_3325IMG_4430IMG_4496

I love how you think you are so much bigger than you really are, your independence and how you love to do everything that your big sister does.

IMG_4976IMG_3635IMG_4656

I love your sweetness, how you love to cuddle and how you pat my back when I hold you, melting my heart, dissolving it with every touch.

IMG_1500IMG_3964IMG_4938IMG_5217

I love how happy you look when you realize that you are at mammy and gumps’ house. The big smile as you come through the door, holding out your little arms to us.

IMG_3799IMG_3516aniyah at chuckwagon

I love how you like to smell things and how you make us laugh when you do it, so we are always finding something for you to smell.

IMG_3547IMG_3701IMG_4015

I love your big beautiful brown eyes that have power over us, bidding us to come closer.

IMG_5896IMG_9841IMG_7079IMG_5221IMG_4690IMG_1258

I love how you would rather be outside than anywhere else. How you plead with us to take you out, even in the cold and rain, it delights your soul.

IMG_7923IMG_7902IMG_1864IMG_1788

I love how God is growing you and changing you into the beautiful little girl that you have become. Your fun, witty personality and your loving tenderness.

IMG_5266IMG_9837IMG_7399IMG_7378

I love how you love to play with your toys, and how you delight in including us in your play. How you love your babies so completely.

IMG_7032IMG_5223IMG_4908IMG_4310

I love everything about you sweet, beautiful girl and I cherish every second I have with you.

Happy 2nd Birthday to a most amazing brown eyed girl!

How Do I Love Thee? (Sonnet 43)

Elizabeth Barrett Browning, 1806 – 1861

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of being and ideal grace.
I love thee to the level of every day’s
Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light.
I love thee freely, as men strive for right.
I love thee purely, as they turn from praise.
I love thee with the passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood’s faith.
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost saints. I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life; and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death.

For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38-39

Aria Baptized

City Church in Decatur Texas held a special event last Sunday, and gumps and I wouldn’t of missed it for all the world.

IMG_3337

Aria got baptized!

IMG_3339IMG_3340

She has waited for this event to take place since she accepted Jesus into her heart.

IMG_3342IMG_3345

And the outward expression of her commitment was witnessed by all on this glorious day!

IMG_3348IMG_3349

And this mammy’s heart is so full because of grace, joy and the outpouring of love that our Lord has given us. Not only do I get to spend my life here on earth with this amazing, beautiful little girl, but for all eternity also. And the Lord covers us with His goodness and we are so grateful!

Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Matt. 28:19

The Birthday Bash

It’s usually the special occasions that get us all under the same roof. Busy schedules and long distances between us make it hard to come together.

So on my 53rd birthday my family came home and we spent the day together.

I treasure these times for I know that as time moves on and schedules pile up, it will get harder and harder to make it happen.

Thanks to our awesome friends, Chris and Tish we celebrated with fresh crappie, a family favorite since our children were very small. They even provided the deep fryer to cook the fish!

IMG_2956IMG_2961IMG_2963

Martin cooked the fish outside and Jason supervised.

IMG_2967IMG_2968IMG_2976IMG_2980IMG_2989

It is always a good and joyous day when we are all together.

IMG_2994IMG_2995IMG_2993IMG_2999

We feasted on and off throughout the day.

IMG_3001IMG_3002IMG_3005IMG_3013IMG_3014IMG_3021IMG_3027

Then came the birthday cake, which I ate on until bedtime–shhhh-that’s a secret!

IMG_3035IMG_3054IMG_3059IMG_3062IMG_3064 IMG_3074IMG_3083IMG_3092

We spent the rest of the day just being together.

IMG_3115IMG_3136IMG_3142IMG_3144IMG_3148IMG_3150IMG_3153IMG_3167IMG_3171IMG_3172IMG_3176IMG_3177IMG_3180

And no, I am not 97, a joke from Kory, but I don’t mind growing older. Life is amazing and these are the moments that hem us in.

The Dedication

It was Hannah in 1st Samuel that set the example for parents to dedicate their children to the Lord, for His purposes.

IMG_2780

And the heart that is turned toward Him is pleasing in His sight, the desire to give back to Him the most precious treasure.

IMG_2771IMG_2773IMG_2775

So they come before man; family and friends to declare this desire and this commitment to the Lord.

IMG_2782

For it is the wise heart that knows “from whence comes their help”, and we all “labor in vain unless the Lord builds the house.”

IMG_2786

Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb is a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, so are the children of one’s youth. Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them; they shall not be ashamed, but shall speak with their enemies in the gate. Psalm 127:3-5

Swimming Lessons

On the last day of swimming lessons I went along to see how the girls were doing.

ImageImageImage

Aria had been eager for me to see her swim.

ImageImageImage

She had been telling me how much she loved it and how much she had learned, and now this mammy was here to see for herself.

ImageImageImageImage

I followed them around and snapped pictures, trying to capture their lessons. Mammy was impressed!

ImageImageImageImageImageImage

Coach said that both girls had advanced three levels over where they should be.

ImageImageImageImageImageImage

They both loved it so much and will be returning later in the summer for round two.

ImageImageImageImage

At the end, they were tired and their little tummies was full of pool water. But it was a good lesson and they were happy.

Rough Waters

It was my great idea to go kayaking on the lake, me being inexperienced, not really knowing what was in store.

ImageImageImage

Martin assured me that it would be ok, and we were off.

ImageImage

The wind was up and as soon as we got out of the truck, I began to have second thoughts.

ImageImage

The waves started slapping up against the kayak as soon as I sat down, drenching me and I was afraid for my camera.

ImageImage

We paddled out into the lake, just enough to get to the slue where there would be smooth waters.

ImageImageImage

I could see the contrast from within the slue and I was getting a little worried. I knew I would have to make it back-against the wind.

Image

As we hit the lake, outside the protection of the slue, the battle was on. I paddled and paddled but could not get anywhere. The wind was so strong it was carrying me away from Martin. I could see him trying to keep track of me and also try to stay on course. I was scared I would be carried off into the middle of the lake. And then . . . I started slow and steady. Every word it’s own sentence .

I. Can. Do. All. Things. Through. Christ. Who. Strengthens. Me.

Then I went just a little faster, I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

Then it became a chant:  I can do-all things through-Christ who strengthens me!

And finally I broke out in song, singing at the top of my lungs (no one could hear me over the tremendous wind)

I can do, all things through, Christ who strengthens me!

And the more I sang, the louder I got, the faster I paddled. Faster and Faster, with strength I did not know I possessed, I paddled, just behind Martin. I saw the relief in his face when he could see me, and I told him,

“I wasn’t scared, I was just singing.”

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13

Most of us grew up listening to Paul Harvey’s The Rest of The Story. It was always a favorite of mine and I listened with great intent and anticipation, waiting to hear the end of the story that came together, like a ensemble of melodious words, always leaving you with wonder and deep thought.

This is not a profound story. It will not leave you with a thoughtful heart or a provoke you into deep thinking. It is however a funny story that I hope will make your heart smile at the thought of it. And it has a Rest Of The Story flavor to it:

It had been a whole week spent without seeing my girls, and mammy’s heart was aching, heavy with missing them. I had to run errands and was on the road when I talked to Andrea.  “I need to go to the store, and Aria said, ‘I have a great idea! You can take us to mammy’s house and we can stay there while you go to the store!’”

This mammy could not contain her joy, “I think that IS a great idea!”

I explained to Andrea that I had some errands to run and I promised to call on my way home.

After I had completed my tasks, I had just one more stop to make. The Family Dollar store for just one item, a $6 blow up pool.

I returned home, called Andrea, then blew up the pool. Then I set to prepare for my precious girls. I made lemonade, pulled out cookies from the freezer, filled up the pool, set the sprinkler in place and put out seating and beach towels.

ImageImageImageImage

I found last years swimming suits and set them on the counter-above a note that read, “Put These On”.

I then proceeded to make a trail of signs leading them to the pool.

ImageImageImageImage

Then I waited . . . .

Soon, they were here, and I ran outside with my camera and swatted down, just about their level and waited to snap the pictures. I could hear their little feet as they ran throughout the house. I could picture them moving as swiftly as they could, pulling off their clothes and putting on their suits. And sure enough, in no time at all they were there, smiling and laughing with delight.

ImageImage

They played in the pool for a while then it was time for mommy to go to the store, so mammy dried the girls off and took them inside to wait for gumps. He did not know they were coming, so I tried to call him, but he did not answer.

ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Gumps pulled in the driveway just a few minutes later and I scooped up baby and we all ran to hide from gumps-something Aria always does when he comes home. We hid in the piano room, just inside the french doors and waited. Aria and I whispered to each other and baby was froze in my arms, not daring to move her head, but listened to us whisper, moving her eyes back and forth, from sissy to mammy. Every couple of seconds I would lean into her and whisper, “shhhhh” in her ear.

We heard gumps come in and we waited and waited and waited and waited. We strained our necks trying to peer around the doors, but he was nowhere to be seen.

Finally, we heard him again, and Aria whispered to me, “mammy, I can see him in the reflection of the glass!” I moved just a little and I was able to see him too. He was in the kitchen, looking through the refrigerator and checking out the pans on the stove. Obviously, he was hungry.

After what seemed like an eternity, he finally left the kitchen and headed our way. When baby saw him, she squealed with delight, her little finger was pointing at him and her legs were kicking and flailing wildly. I tried to contain her, but it was enough for him to realize we were there. As he turned to come into the room, we jumped out, and like always, he acted surprised. The girls jumped into his arms and they all went to play.

As far as I was concerned that was the end to a wonderful, perfect story, but it was not.

The rest of the story.

Aria has a pair of Martha Washington glasses that she likes to play with and use for dress up. She had spent the day playing with them and brought them with her when she came to our house. Upon entering the house and seeing her swimming suit, she sat her glasses down and ran to the bathroom to change.

When I was telling Andrea that we waited and waited and waited for gumps, overhearing us, he told us why.

“When I came in, I saw your sign that said, “Put these on”, so I put the glasses on and followed the signs outside.”

ImageImageImageImage

We laughed hysterically at the vision of gumps wearing Aria’s glasses and following the trail that had been meant for the girls.
