Vintage Pattern

I am pretty sure that I made this same dress for the girl’s mama twenty seven years ago.  And yes, that is her name written on the front of the pattern.

 Image

I had to adjust the pattern size for the dresses. This pattern is a size 2 and I needed a size 5 and 6 month.

 ImageImage

I only used the pattern for the bodice.

Image

Image

For the skirt, I measured and cut the desired length.

Image

They each have a belt made out of ribbon and topped with a fabric flower.

ImageImage

I also used ribbon for the straps.

Image

The bodice fabric is made out a tank top found in the women’s section at Walmart.

ImageImage

The skirt fabric is from curtains that I made for my mom twenty something years ago. I have used this curtain fabric over and over again.

ImageImage

I already have plans to make a couple more of these dresses.

But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. Colossians 3:14

Shavuot

Shavuot or the Festival of Weeks (Feast of Harvest), or as we know it: The Festival of Pentecost is celebrated 50 days after Passover.

Image

So my beautiful friends and sisters in Christ put together the Feast of Pentecost and several of us join with them to celebrate!  ImageImage

Us coming together was simply to celebrate our Lord through this Festival!  ImageImageImageImage

To experience Him through the ancient customs of Israel.

ImageImageImageImageImage

And the gathering together of friends and fellow disciples of Christ come together for a deeper understanding of Jesus and His life, a discovery of His Jewishness.   Image

The passion held in our hearts draws us nearer, to learn more of our Savior, and He bids us to dig deeper still.

Image

We are learning His customs and discovering anew the life of our Lord.  Image

And we pray with hands open, held up, to receive His blessings, and to offer ourselves to Him completely.

 ImageImageImage

This breaking of bread is a spiritual bond that grows us together, and we are of one mind.

 ImageImageImageImage

And we feast!

 ImageImageImageImage

And as we feast, we gain a deeper comprehension of God’s plan, for He calls it ,”The feasts of the Lord.” Leviticus 23:2  ImageImage

And us, as Christians desire to learn more, to plunge deeper into God’s plan of redemption, to have greater understanding of the feasts and what it means for us. For Jesus, our Lord and Savior is the supreme fulfillment of each and every single feast.   Image

And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them: ‘The feasts of the Lord, which you shall proclaim to be holy convocations, these are My feasts.”  Leviticus 23:1-2

Fish Fry

Spring time in Texas can only mean one thing to so many. Crappie fishing!   Image

After Martin and his daddy return home from a successful trip on the lake, their catch is inspected carefully.

 Image

This is the prize catch of the day!   Image

Each fish is counted and transferred over to the bucket to get cleaned. The conversation is centered around the fishing trip.   Image

It was a good afternoon for father and son!   Image

Times that get less and less as the years pass on, as the busyness of this life interferes with what really matters.

Image

And these are treasured times that will carry on with time.

Image

And pops leaves the fish for us, and we save it for the weekend, when we can extend the blessing with our own children, the third and fourth generations of the tradition. Image

And it’s a celebration, for time together for all of us gets less and less as the years have passed on, as the busyness of this life interferes with what really matters.

Image

It’s a group effort, everyone sharing in the preparations, working side by side.

ImageImageImage

The feast is on, and we not only feast on the fresh catch but on the company and presence of each other.

Image

And these are treasured times that will carry on with time.

“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. Or what man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!  Matthew 7:7-11

We met at 7:30 am to drive the 1 1/2 hour trip to Arlington Texas to go to the annual homeschool book fair. We have had our tickets for two months

Many people shall come and say, “Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; He will teach us His ways, and we shall walk in His paths.” For out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. Isaiah 2:3

The finished dress.Image

I don’t know about you but I have the hardest time finding knit fabric I like. Even the fabric weight matters to me, so when I don’t find what I am looking for I start looking in the T-shirt section.  Image

Although I used a pattern I changed it to make the dress the way I wanted it.

This is the pattern I used.  Image

This pattern has sleeves and I didn’t want sleeves since it is a summer dress (in Texas).

Image

I wanted the shoulders to be cut in a little more, so I cut off some of the fabric at the shoulders to get the desired look.

I also took bigger seams in at the sides to give it a more fitted look.

Image

I sewed a vintage lace overlay over the front of the dress.

Image

The dress is mainly white and off-white, so I wanted to add just a little color.   Image

I used a blue knit fabric cut on the bias to bind the neck and shoulder edges.   ImageImage

The back has a key hole opening and an old button that closes it.   Image

The finished top part of the dress.  Image

I started at the bottom of the dress and sewed a white vintage tulle ruffle, then added a layer of vintage off-white lace.   Image

I added another layer of the tulle and at the top I added a final layer of the lace. The top piece of lace is only in the front, covering the lace overlay.   Image

I added vintage lace going down the front of the dress but I only sewed it down on the bodice.Image

I sewed off-white pearl beads down the front of the bodice.

ImageImage

I had a long necklace of tiny off-white beads that topped off the dress.   Image

Image

I love anything that is old or vintage and this lace was an amazing find!

ImageImageImage

I especially want to thank my amazing model Nikyla!

Image

His name shall endure forever; His name shall continue as long as the sun. And men shall be blessed in Him; all nations shall call Him blessed. Psalm 72:17

A total winner!

Image

I have had an idea swimming around in my head for a long time now and was delighted to find this pattern in the size I needed tucked away with my vintage patterns.

ImageImage

I changed the pattern and will blog about it with a sewing tutorial later on.

ImageImage

I made the dress out of a white cotton knit, covering the bodice with an off-white lace overlay.

ImageImage

Starting at the bottom of the dress I began to sew on layers of vintage lace and tulle, alternating the white and off-white.

ImageImage

I wanted some color, so I added a blue bias around the neck and arms.

ImageImage

I used vintage lace running down the length of the dress and sewed on off-white pearl beads down the bodice.

I topped it off with a vintage beaded necklace.

African Safari

In the summer of 2011 I made the long journey to Kenya Africa on a mission trip. Our team worked at a children’s home outside of Nairobi.

We did, however, take a day during that time to go on an African safari. Here are a few pictures taken from that safari. The pictures were taken by a few different people that so sweetly allowed me to use their pictures.

The vans open up on the top so we could stand up to take pictures.Image

After a few hours on the road we finally made it to the safari park and this was the first rest stop.

The water coming out of the waterfall looked like mud. ImageImage

I love how you can see the roots of this tree growing down the mountain.  Image

Another stop was this beautiful lake abounding with birds of all sorts. An absolutely amazing sight!

ImageImageImageImageImageImage

There were so many different kinds of deer.

ImageImage

Monkeys and Baboons were everywhere along this trip.

ImageImageImageImage

The giraffes were so beautiful and graceful and they seemed to be in no hurry.

ImageImageImage

The zebras were everywhere. We even saw them at the children’s home. Often we saw the zebras and the giraffes together.

ImageImageImageImage

They lions were actually quite a distance away from us. There were three of them sleeping up in a tree.

ImageImage

And at the end of the day, this lookout point was our last stop. Breathtaking!

Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth the living creature according to its kind: cattle and creeping thing and the beast of the earth, each according to its kind”; and it was so.                    Genesis 1:24

A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children.  Proverbs 13:22a

The years have slipped by so quickly, with much ease. Quietly . . . gently pushing through, with an abundance of joy and gladness.   Image

It has been 29 years since I have been given a most treasured gift from the hand of God.   ImageImageImage

Bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh”(Gen. 2:23a), hearts beating together as one. Us, merged together within the dwelling of my womb, growing and expanding under the shadow of  His wings.

ImageImage

And the most beautiful sight I have ever been witness to has been the blessings of watching this gift blossom and grow.   ImageImage

From baby to toddler into beautiful girlhood.   ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Gracefully unfolding into the radiance of woman, wife and now . . . mother.   ImageImageImageImageImage

And you have grown into this ‘gentle and quiet spirit which is precious in the sight of the God. (1 Peter 3:4)” And we have also grown together through the years. Mother and daughter, friend and prayer partners, sharing our hearts, dreams, delights and the very great joys and victories of this walk.

   Image

And we have been carried along this stream of life, always moving and branching out, extending and growing, flowing together, moving as one. Being carried tenderly along on this spiritual journey by the One that holds us all together.   Image

And it’s a retracing the heart leaping moments and resurfacing the still frames of time through the faces and laughter of your own treasured gifts. A look . . . an expression . . . a gesture, precious smiles and contagious laughter and I have traveled back these 29 years through my granddaughters, the extension of His gift, that plunges deeper and wider still. You are my infant daughter once again through Aniyah’s toothless grin and my little girl as I hold Aria in my arms and see you, her momma looking back at me.   Image Image

This gift goes on and on and on through the mercy of our Lord, and “He crowns the years with His goodness and His paths drip with abundance.(Psalm 65:11)” And I am the recipient of these amazing gifts, and “every good and perfect gift come from the Lord.(James 1:17a)   ImageImageImage

And you, my dear daughter have been a joy and a delight to me from the very first instant I beheld you. I have learned so much from you and I am a much better person because of you and my heart has known and held the sweetness of a daughter’s love through the joy of you.  Image

Happy Birthday to my beloved Andrea!  Image

Rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God. 1 Peter 3:4

Chicken and Rice

Chicken and dumplings are one my family’s favorite dishes—except Kory. He has never liked the dumplings. So in an effort to try and please everyone I began to try different approaches.

This is what I came up with and everyone is happy with it. It makes a bunch so there is enough to share.

This is what you will need:    Image

Boil the chicken until it is completely done, then remove the chicken and keep the broth. Image

To the broth add 1 can of mushroom soup and/or 1 can of chicken soup. If I have both I use both, but if I don’t I just use whatever I have. Add two chicken bouillon cubes and stir.   Image

Shred the chicken, Image

and add it to the pot.   Image

Next, add the chicken flavor Rice-a-Roni,   Image

and the seasoning mix.  Image

Mix well, bring to a boil and simmer until it is thick. I usually simmer for about 45 minutes to 1 hour.

Serve with mashed potatoes.   Image

“Also in the day of your gladness, in your appointed feasts, and at the beginning of your months, you shall blow the trumpets over your burnt offerings and over the sacrifices of your peace offerings; and they shall be a memorial for you before your God: I am the Lord your God.”  Numbers 10:10
